Lenoir Nature Preserve, Yonkers
9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Identifying Hawks Overhead program at 8 AM
Join us as we kick off another season of the Lenoir Hawk Watch located
in north Yonkers overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades.
Hawks start their migration south as early as late August and by mid September things really start to pick up. If the conditions are right -
North or northwest winds a day or two after a cold front- hundreds, and sometimes thousands of Broad-wing hawks can be seen in a single day.
Prolonged wet weather prior to the front also increase numbers
We will meet at our hawk watch site - behind the Lenoir Mansion on the big lawn by 9 AM. We'll search the skies for migrating hawks.
Broad-wings, Osprey, Kestrel, Sharp-shinned Hawk and even a Bald Eagle or two are expected. Bring a lawn chair, snacks and refreshments. Bring
binoculars if you have them but some will be available for loan. Hawks are lowest in the sky early in the day. By afternoon they may be
numerous, but very high as they form kettles (swirling hawks circling in a rising column of hot air) in groups of 20, 50, or a few hundred!
For more information call Michael Bochnik at 914-237-9331.
